Two Doctors of Zhejiang University attended the Chinese-American-Australia Climate Forum in Harvard

During March 2nd -5th, 2010, Chinese-American-AustraliaDoctor Forum was held in Harvard University. There were 45 doctors from Go8, C9 andHarvardUniversityattending the meeting. Doctor Yanjun Zhang, Department of Comparative Education, College of Education Zhejiang University and Doctor Hui Wang School of Biosystems Engineering and Food Science,ZhejiangUniversityattended the international conference and delivered speeches.

In March 2009, Prof. Janhua Yan, Deputy Dean of Graduate School of Zhejiang University, who was invited to theGraduateSchoolsummit of Go8 inCanberra,Australia, suggested that 9 Chinese Universities should attend the conference to broaden the graduates’ international vision and to cultivate the high-level international talents. As one of the invited universities, the graduated school prepared for the candidate screening positively. All the applicants should pass the application, written examination and interview to be the candidates, whose research work and foreign language proficiency were also qualified. After the second screening byHarvardUniversityorganizing committee, there were two doctors left to be the delegates.

The forum focused on “Climate: Science+ Humanities”. People discussed the solutions to the climate problem, water resource and utilization, energy and conversion, population problem and sustainable development to appeal for people’s climate crisis consciousness by the interdisciplinary and multi-angle analysis and discussion on the climate problem. Meanwhile, the forum provided a platform for the intercourse and cooperation between the three countries’ graduates.

On the morning of March 2nd, Hui Wang made a report “Sustainable Utilization of Bamboo Forests to Contribute Abatement of Greenhouse Effect and Petroleum Crisis inChina”, which was based on Chinese energy and resource. In the report he took the comprehensive utilization of bamboo resources as an example to show the new way dealing with our countries’ energy crisis. He also expressed his unique opinion on the problem of Chinese biomass resource utilization and the high-tech application in the biomass materialization and utilization. On the afternoon of March 4th, Yanjun Zhang had a speech “The Experience and Development Strategy of a Country Changing from a Populous Nation to a Powerful Nation with Strong Human Resources——Chinas Way in Improving the Quality of Its Population Through Education Innovation”. He introduced Chinese population development strategy: Step 1. a population nation to a nation with human resources; Step 2. a nation with human resources to a powerful nation with strong human resources. He analyzed the relation between the development strategy and energy utilization to reveal the significance of the strategy to promote the world’s economy and society sustainable development. The speech increased American andAustraliaexperts’ understanding ofChina, which was favorable to the further research and cooperation on the climate, population and education between three countries’ delegates.

After the communication with the delegates, the two doctors found that the students of Harvard Universityand Go8 studied very hard and they communicated with tutors and other students positively. Their open-minded and team spirit was worth learning. After the meeting most of the graduates agreed that the climate change was long-term, so the countries’ sustainable development needed international and interdisciplinary cooperation. Therefore, the delegates exchanged the contact information to communicate someday.

During the sessions our delegates visited Harvard Universityand MIT. As the most famous universities, Harvard and MIT had abundant resources, sophisticated experiment environment and largest libraries. Both of the universities also shared their resources to provide a good academic environment. The constructions of the two universities had unique styles, which were born to be classical. When entering the Harvard campus, people will feel positive, pragmatic and aggressive, which is one of the reasons why Harvard can have such enormous reputation in the world.
