2019 SEEEP High Level Ph.D. Summer School held at Zijingang Campus

The Sino-EUEngineering Education Platform (SEEEP)International High Level Doctoral Summer Schoolhas been held for five years, with continuous and valuable efforts from allsides. Theevent is jointly sponsored by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), KTHRoyal Institute of Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and ZhejiangUniversity. This year, the fifth summer school, with the theme of"Affordable Energy Transition", was launched in Zhejiang Universityfrom Aug. 19 to 26. More than 50 Ph.D. students and professors from 17world-famous universities in China, Sweden, the Netherlands, Czech, Italy andSpain, gathered in Zhejiang University, focusing on the various possibilitiesof economic energy conversion.

Duringthe summer school, the students worked closely in group, discussing a certaintopic about social-economic constraints and technological solutions in energytransition. “In my group, we communicated well and I am proud of our finalwork! An amazing and beautiful campus and I am very much enjoyed my staying atZJU,” said a student from Sweden.

In addition, they joined lectures by theprofessors in various topics and technical visits were arranged in QingshanLake Clean Energy Utilization Center of ZJU, Hangzhou RUNPAQ TechnologyCompany, Zhejiang Energy Group and Hangzhou Gas Group. “The visits show moreoptions of employment for Ph.D. students, and offer plenty of information aboutdiscipline development and hardware platforms. These are all encouragement andsupport for researchers,” said by a Chinese student.

“All over 10 scores out of 10,knowledgeable and fruitful. I learnt a lot of technical things and relatedresearch information from valuable teachers, and the school arrangement werefive-star. Hope to join again,” said a student from Pakistan.

For the Ph.D. students that participatein the summer school, Professor Björn Laumert, Head of Energy TechnologyDepartment, from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, had very high expectationsof them, and he said "With this school we had the opportunity to show thatyou cannot only say that I have great technology and ideas. This is all drivenby an economic and social system that needs to change. You will be the generationthat need to implement these in your home."

Also, Professor David Smeulders,Director of Energy Technology Research Center, Department of Mechanical Engineering,Eindhoven University of Technology, said “When we start to cooperate is when westart to know each other. I hope we will go back to wherever we came from andshare good memories, ideas and opportunities to collaborate in the future.”
